“K” LINE Achieves Significant Emission Cuts with LNG-Fueled NEREUS HIGHWAY

74

  • “K” LINE receives its first LNGfueled car carrier, NEREUS HIGHWAY.
  • LNG fuel reduces harmful emissions, aligning with the IMO regulations.
  • The vessel supports “K” LINE’s Environmental Vision 2050 for achieving netzero GHG emissions.

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) reports that it has received delivery of NEREUS HIGHWAY, a car carrier with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles. Built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd., this is the first LNGfueled vessel ordered by “K” LINE from a Chinese shipyard.

LNG Fuel and Emission Reductions

The vessel is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which offers significant environmental benefits. LNG can cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2530%, sulfur oxides (SOx) by nearly 100%, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by approximately 75% compared to traditional heavy fuel oil.

These reductions make it compliant with IMO Tier III NOx regulations. The ship also features WinGD’s 7X62DF2.1 iCER engine, which lowers methane slip when using LNG fuel.

“K” LINE’s Environmental Vision 2050

Under its Environmental Vision 2050, “K” LINE aims to improve CO2 emissions efficiency by 50% by 2030, surpassing the IMO’s target of 40%. The company also aims to achieve netzero GHG emissions by 2050.

“We will continue to work on the introduction of new fuels which have a low environmental impact and take on the challenge of achieving the targets we have established,” states the company.
