Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” Line) recently supplied marine biofuel to the VIKING OCEAN, a car carrier it operates, marking the first time biofuel has been used on its vessels in Japan.
K Line supplies biofuel to car carrier
The biofuel was provided at Yokohama Daikoku C-4 Terminal, which is operated by the “K” Line Group. The vessel is owned by Gram Car Carriers, a long-term partner of “K” Line. The fuel, composed of 24% Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) blended with very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO), is designed to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 84% in the well-to-wake process.
It is expected to cut the VIKING OCEAN’s CO2 emissions by about 190 tons during its voyage. The biofuel is made from renewable organic resources, such as biomass, that are not used for food or feed crops.
As informed, as part of its Environmental Vision 2050, “K” Line aims to improve CO2 emissions efficiency by 50% by 2030 compared to 2008 levels, surpassing the IMO’s target of a 40% reduction.
