Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) has taken a proactive step toward improving maritime fire safety by conducting a live fire extinguishing test involving a scrapped gasoline vehicle. The test, held on October 17, 2025, at the Technical Center of Kashiwa Tech Co., Ltd. in Bando City, Ibaraki Prefecture, aimed to simulate a fire inside the hold of a car carrier and evaluate effective firefighting methods.
Testing New Firefighting Equipment and Techniques
The exercise brought together 25 participants, who practiced extinguishing fires using both standard fire hose nozzles and a newly developed nozzle with enhanced spray performance. With support from the Maritime Disaster Prevention Center, participants also observed a demonstration of a specially designed nozzle capable of targeting and suppressing fires inside vehicles.
This hands-on test offered participants valuable insights into how rapidly a vehicle can ignite and the effectiveness of different firefighting approaches in confined environments such as car carrier holds.
Advancing Safety for Diverse Vehicle Types
This was the first time “K” LINE conducted a full-scale vehicle fire test, marking a significant step toward advancing onboard fire safety. The company also plans to conduct further verification tests to strengthen its response capabilities for various vehicle types, including electric vehicles, which pose unique firefighting challenges.
With car carrier fire risks gaining global attention, “K” LINE’s initiative underscores its commitment to enhancing maritime safety standards. By combining practical training, innovative equipment, and data-driven insights, the company continues to prioritize the protection of its crew, vessels, and customers’ valuable cargo.
