  • A Kalmar representative provides on-site maintenance support at SCCT.
  • Electrification is central to SCCT’s decarbonization vision and net zero by 2040 goal.
  • The project marks Kalmar’s first electric reachstacker deployment in Africa.

Kalmar reports that it has provided APM Terminals with the electric reach stacker as part of its pilot introduction to the Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) in Egypt. The transaction is booked in Q3 2023 order intake of Kalmar and marks a significant step towards terminal decarbonisation toward both company goals.

Strategic Significance of SCCT

SCCT is strategically located at the mouth of the Suez Canal, a critical position on one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, offering access to key local and global markets. With a vision to become the largest hub in the Mediterranean and Egypt’s premier gateway, SCCT is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040.

Features of Kalmar’s Electric Reachstacker

The Kalmar electric reach stacker offers:

  1. Lifting capacities of up to 45 tonnes.
  2. Enhanced eco-efficiency in cargo handling while maintaining productivity and safety.
  3. Modular battery options and flexible charging solutions to suit operational needs.

Pilot Program Goals

The piloting phase will span several months, during which APM Terminals and Kalmar will collaborate to:

  1. Collect data and insights on technical performance.
  2. Assess infrastructure requirements for electrification.
  3. Evaluate the operational implications of using electric equipment.

Statements from Leadership

Keld Mosgaard Christensen, Chief Executive Officer of SCCT: “Electrification is one of the cornerstones of our decarbonisation vision, and this pilot is an opportunity to accelerate the maturity and adoption of electric equipment. We are excited to team up with Kalmar on this pilot, aiming to gain important insights into technical aspects of the equipment, infrastructure requirements, and operational implications.”

Peter Olsson, VP, Counter Balanced Global Sales Kalmar: “APM Terminals is leading by example with its commitment to achieve net zero by 2040. As electrification is central to their decarbonisation vision, we are proud that they have chosen to pilot our electric reachstacker to support them in realising their goals.
