KCC Adopts bound4blue eSAIL® System for CABU III Newbuild

354

According to Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC), a subsidiary has reached an agreement with Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. and Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. to equip the third CABU III newbuilding with KCC’s first Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS), featuring two bound4blue eSAILs® suction sails. Expected for delivery in Q3 2026, the newbuild will be among the first tanker/dry bulk carriers to adopt bound4blue’s advanced eSAIL® technology, which aims to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by harnessing wind power.

Wind-Assisted Propulsion Technology with eSAILs®

The CABU III newbuilding will feature two 24-meter eSAIL® suction sails, the largest installed to date, marking a milestone for wind-assisted propulsion in commercial vessels. Placed at the bow, the sails will maximize propulsive efficiency and maintain operational flexibility during port maneuvers.

Selection of eSAILs® Technology

Following an in-depth study comparing sail technologies, KCC identified bound4blue’s eSAILs® as the optimal choice due to their efficiency on targeted trade routes. eSAILs® employ a fan-driven system to channel air across an optimized surface, creating clean forward thrust that reduces reliance on the main engine.

KCC’s Environmental Commitment

Aligned with its goals to cut carbon intensity by over 45% from 2018 levels by decade’s end, KCC has invested USD 32 million across 15 energy efficiency projects, reducing fuel use and emissions by an estimated 15% on its fleet built after 2015. This initiative is part of KCC’s broader sustainability strategy to leverage innovations that enhance its vessels’ trading and operational efficiency.

Industry Perspectives on eSAIL® Installation

KCC’s CEO, Engebret Dahm, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with bound4blue, highlighting the potential of wind propulsion to support decarbonization in shipping. David Ferrer, CTO and co-founder of bound4blue, also celebrated the partnership as a landmark contract and a first for bound4blue in China, reinforcing KCC’s leadership in sustainable marine solutions.
