What happened?

A general cargo ship struck Northern Lock’s Gate in Kiel, Kiel Canal at around 1800 UTC Mar 13, while entering Canal, en route from Klaipeda Lithuania to Immingham UK.

According to reports, the accident was caused by the ship’s engine failure.

Damages reported

The vessel’s bow reportedly sustained serious damages and she was towed by two tugs to Lindenau Shipyard, Kiel.

Gate was also damaged, and that’s bad news for Kiel Canal shipping.

Transit delays

Due to this accident, Northern Lock is inoperable until at least Mar 15, so there’s only one Lock left, and all ships transiting Canal are facing delays.
