Klaipėda Port Cargo Throughput Rises 11% In First Nine Months Of 2025

The Port of Klaipėda has recorded a robust 11% increase in cargo throughput over the first nine months of 2025, handling 28.7 million tons of cargo compared to the same period last year. Container and ro-ro cargo remain dominant, supported by strong growth in LNG and construction materials. Despite global challenges and regional geopolitical shifts, Klaipėda continues to assert its position as the leading port among Baltic nations, holding 41% of the market share.

Strong Growth Driven by Containers, LNG, and Infrastructure Projects

Container cargo handling at Klaipėda surged by 31% to nearly 9.6 million tons, representing the largest growth segment. LNG and construction materials each grew by 23%, totaling about 1.7 million tons. The floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Independence continues to play a vital role in supporting Lithuania’s energy independence following the cessation of Russian gas imports.

Increased construction material volumes reflect the country’s ongoing infrastructure expansion, particularly in road and railway projects. Ro-ro cargo rose by 6% to nearly 5 million tons, while oil products grew modestly by 2% to almost 3 million tons, driven by global market and energy transition dynamics.

Passenger and Shipbuilding Activity on the Rise Despite Cargo Shifts

Passenger traffic through Klaipėda grew by 8% year-on-year, with 26,395 additional travelers. Cruise passengers increased by 12%, underscoring the port’s growing appeal in maritime tourism. Meanwhile, 52 ships were repaired and two new vessels were built over the first three quarters of the year, highlighting Klaipėda’s shipbuilding and repair capabilities.

However, some cargo categories saw declines. Scrap metal handling dropped by 18%, wood exports decreased by 16%, fertilizers fell by 13%, and grain exports declined by 10% due to harvest variations and regional sanctions affecting trade with Russia and Belarus. Most fertilizers now originate from Lithuanian producers AB Achema and AB Lifosa.

Despite selective declines across a few cargo groups, Klaipėda Port continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability in a volatile global environment. Its expanding cargo mix, increased LNG handling, and steady passenger growth have reinforced its dominance in the Baltic region. With 41% of the market share well ahead of Riga, Tallinn, Ventspils, and Liepaja Klaipėda remains a key hub driving Lithuania’s economic activity and progress toward energy independence.
