The Klaipeda Port Authority is actively pursuing its goal of making the Lithuanian port a leader in port services, the maritime sector, and green energy, reports Container News.

Development Strategy

The Klaipeda Port Authority has announced an ambitious development strategy, committing to invest €308 million (US$320 million) over the next four years. The investment will focus on modern infrastructure, creating value in maritime businesses, and sustainability initiatives.

Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipeda Port Authority, explained that the goal is to transform the port into a hub that not only adapts to global changes but also actively shapes them.

In addition to regular annual investments in quay modernization, railway line upgrades, and channel dredging, the Port Authority will prioritize new infrastructure projects from 2025-2028.

Cruise shipping infrastructure will also be significantly improved, with quay reconstruction and new construction planned in the city center, along with adjustments to water depths.

Cruise Terminal

Over the next three years, Klaipeda Port will add a new cruise terminal with public spaces, including an amphitheater, pedestrian and cycling paths, and recreation areas.

Starting next year, ferries will connect to shore power to reduce pollution and noise. This initiative will be supported by four new electricity supply stations at the Central and Container Terminals, with plans for further electrification.

A new fleet base, housing three new vessels (two hybrid pilot boats and a hydrogen-powered waste collection vessel), is under construction.

The Port Authority is also leading the Baltic States’ first green hydrogen production project, with completion expected next year. Agreements are in place to utilize this hydrogen in stevedoring and rail transport. Finally, investments are planned for Jurbarkas Port to promote inland waterway transport.
