Korea Marine Transport Company (KMTC Line), a major intra-Asia carrier, has ordered its biggest ships ever in its 70-year history. The company has confirmed the order of two 8,700 TEU vessels from HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. These LNG dual-fuelled and methanol-ready ships are scheduled to be delivered in early 2027 and are priced at $115 million each 10% cost increase compared to similar orders two years ago, reports Container News.
First New Orders Since 2020
This is the first KMTC Line newbuilding project after delivering two 2,500 TEU vessels, KMTC Seoul and KMTC Dalian, from HD Hyundai Mipo in 2020. The company’s largest vessels are the 6,500 TEU vessels built between 2020 and 2021, which include KMTC Mundra, KMTC Colombo, and KMTC Delhi.
Expansion in High-Growth Markets
The new ships are designed to enhance KMTC Line’s services in the Far East-Middle East and Far East-Indian Subcontinent routes, where demand is rising rapidly. According to a KMTC official, “Bigger ships are needed because demand in the Middle East and India is growing, so we proceeded with the new building orders.”
In July, KMTC Line further expanded its presence in the region by joining X-Press Feeders’ India-Red Sea Express 2 service as a co-loader. This service connects key Indian ports with the Red Sea, further strengthening the company’s footprint in these emerging markets.
