  • The Kohzan Maru VII is the first methanol dual-fuel ocean-going vessel chartered long-term by a Japanese company, officially named during a ceremony on May 23.
  • Building on decades of experience since 1983, the vessel uses methanol as fuel and transports renewable, sustainable methanol.
  • MOL and MGC are strengthening their leadership in advancing carbon-neutral maritime transportation through this innovative vessel.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced the delivery of the Kohzan Maru VII, a new methanol dual-fuel carrier, on May 30. Built by HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea, this vessel will operate under a long-term charter agreement with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. The Kohzan Maru VII is owned by Eifuku Kaiun Co., Ltd. and will support MOL’s ongoing commitment to cleaner fuel solutions.

Naming Ceremony and Commitment to Sustainable Shipping

On May 23, ahead of the vessel’s delivery, a naming ceremony was held at HD Hyundai Mipo, where MGC Chairman Masashi Fujii officially christened the ship “Kohzan Maru VII.” This vessel marks a milestone as the first methanol dual-fuel ocean-going carrier chartered long-term by a Japanese company. Since 1983, when MOL and MGC launched Japan’s first methanol-dedicated carrier, the original Kohzan Maru, they have been pioneers in the safe and efficient transport of methanol by sea.

Building on this legacy, Kohzan Maru VII will not only use methanol as its marine fuel but also transport environmentally sustainable methanol produced from renewable sources. MOL and MGC remain dedicated to leading the maritime industry’s shift toward carbon neutrality, with Kohzan Maru VII playing a key role in advancing sustainable shipping solutions.
