Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) and thyssenkrupp Marine Systems have signed a new cooperation agreement to enhance industrial collaboration in the defence sector. The partnership is focused on supporting the defence needs of Norway, Germany, and allied nations, while deepening mutual trust and advancing future technological cooperation.

Maritime Collaboration Between Norway and Germany

In 2024, the Norwegian Ministry of Defence named Germany as one of four potential partners for a strategic collaboration to replace the Royal Norwegian Navy’s aging Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates. Building on their long-standing submarine cooperation, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) and thyssenkrupp Marine Systems are now taking steps to expand their joint efforts.

Eirik Lie, President of KONGSBERG, highlighted that the new agreement strengthens both industrial ties and the companies’ shared ability to deliver advanced maritime capabilities to Norwegian and German defense forces. He noted that this collaboration reflects the deepening partnership between the two countries’ defense industries.

Oliver Burkhard, CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, emphasized the long-standing relationship with KONGSBERG, shaped by years of allied cooperation. He stated that the new agreement consolidates several existing areas of joint work and enhances their readiness to support current and future naval needs.

The agreement sets the stage for broader long-term cooperation, including potential collaboration on the Vanguard vessel system, missile systems, maritime surveillance, ship systems, and lifecycle support for future frigates—aimed at driving innovation, job creation, and cross-border technology exchange.
