  • Kongsberg Maritime has further cemented its position as a leader in advanced cargo ship design by securing a new contract with Danish operator Tärntank.
  • The latest deal involves the design and outfitting of Tärntank’s eleventh hybrid chemical tanker, which will incorporate cutting-edge wind-assist technology.

Under this new contract, Kongsberg Maritime will develop a 15,000 dwt hybrid chemical tanker equipped with a suite of its advanced technologies aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and reducing emissions. This vessel will join a series of eleven such tankers ordered by Tärntank, with the latest five featuring wind-assist systems.

Fuel Flexibility and Emission Reduction

The new tankers are designed to operate on multiple fuel types including diesel, biofuel, and methanol, and will be fitted with Tärntank’s proprietary battery-powered Hybrid Solution®. The incorporation of wind-assist technology is expected to achieve a significant reduction in emissions, potentially lowering them by up to 19%.

Expert Insights

Rune Ekornesvåg, Sales Director – Ship Design at Kongsberg Maritime, expressed his excitement about the contract: This new order highlights the ongoing commitment of innovative ship owners to integrate sustainable technologies into their fleets. Our design includes the Promas propulsion system, which offers over 6% fuel savings compared to traditional systems and enhances the vessel’s operational flexibility while minimizing environmental impact.”

Partnership and Customer Impact

Claes Möller, CEO of Tärntank, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating: “The collaboration with Kongsberg Maritime, along with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou), is crucial for reducing the carbon footprint of our maritime operations beyond current regulatory requirements. Our customers—NEOT/ST1, NESTE, ESSO/EXXON, and PREEM—are essential in achieving these sustainability targets.”

Future-Focused Approach

Kongsberg Maritime is actively exploring future fuel types such as methanol, ammonia, and biofuels, aligning with its strategic focus on sustainable and low-emission shipping solutions. This approach positions the company as a key player in shaping the future of the maritime industry.

Design Awards and Future Deliveries

This latest contract brings the total number of vessels in this design series to thirteen, including eleven for Tärntank and two additional vessels (without wind-assist technology) for Swedish operator Sirius Redri AB. The construction of these tankers is underway at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou, with the first delivery anticipated in 2025. The design featuring wind-assist technology was honored with the Nor-Shipping Next Generation Ship Award in 2023, underscoring its innovative impact on the industry.
