Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a major contract to supply state-of-the-art systems for nine new shuttle tankers to be built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for the Tsakos Group, reads an official release.
This project represents a significant advancement in the offshore shipping sector, combining robust engineering with sustainable innovation. The vessels will operate under long-term charters in support of offshore oil production activities.
Kongsberg Selected for Major Shuttle Tanker Project
Each of the nine DP2-class Suezmax shuttle tankers will be equipped with Kongsberg’s comprehensive suite of solutions, including dynamic positioning (K-Pos DP2), integrated control and monitoring systems, and advanced automation technologies. These systems are designed for fault tolerance, ensuring high reliability and operational safety during offshore loading and transport. With redundant capabilities and remote diagnostics, the technology helps reduce downtime and enhances vessel efficiency.
The shuttle tankers will also feature cutting-edge propulsion and power solutions. A modern DC grid-based electrical system will optimize energy use and reduce emissions, while advanced thruster systems will provide precise maneuvering and station-keeping capabilities in demanding sea conditions. Together, these elements contribute to greater operational flexibility and reduced environmental impact.
For Kongsberg Maritime, this project reaffirms its leadership in supplying integrated marine solutions to the shuttle tanker market. For Tsakos, the investment represents a significant fleet expansion and positions the company among the leading operators of offshore shuttle tankers globally. The collaboration between shipbuilder, operator, and technology providers exemplifies the maritime industry’s push toward smarter, greener, and safer offshore operations.
