  • Project marks world’s first full electrical tug integration.
  • Contract awarded by Mandovi Drydocks and Ripley Group.
  • The package includes thrusters, ESS, automation, and digital systems.

Kongsberg Maritime has just inked a deal to provide a fully integrated equipment package for India’s very first electric tug, a groundbreaking project that falls under the country’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). This initiative not only represents the world’s first complete electrical tug integration but also marks a major step forward in India’s journey toward maritime decarbonisation, reports Kongsberg.

Contract Scope and Technology Package

The contract, awarded by Mandovi Drydocks in collaboration with Ripley Group, includes permanent magnet (PM) driven azimuth thrusters, cutting-edge electrical systems featuring energy storage (ESS), automation and control systems (K-Chief and K-Chief PMS), digital solutions (Vessel Insight and Vessel Performance), and comprehensive system integration. Kongsberg Maritime India’s Global Customer Support team will be on hand to provide operational support.

First Full-Electric Tug for the Company

Although Kongsberg Maritime has previously supplied technology for several hybrid “e-tug” projects, this is the company’s first venture into full-electric tug contracts.

Tug Design and Delivery Timeline

Designed by NavNautik India, the tug will boast a 60-ton bollard pull. The delivery and commissioning are set for the fourth quarter of 2026, with operations expected to kick off at Deendayal Port in Gujarat, one of the flagship sites under the GTTP, which is championed by the Government of India.

Industry Perspective: Technological Milestone

Annette Holte, Country Manager, Kongsberg Maritime India, said: “This is a proud moment for Kongsberg Maritime. This contract is not only a technological milestone as our first full-electric tug, but it’s also a strong signal of trust from the Indian maritime industry. Our team has worked tirelessly to support owners and yards throughout the GTTP process, and we’re excited to play a key role in delivering the first electric tug in India. It’s a great example of how global expertise and local collaboration can come together to drive sustainable innovation.”

Building Confidence in Emission-Reducing Technologies

Mark Callaway, Senior Sales Manager, Tug Systems, Kongsberg Maritime, added: “Electric tugboats are a significantly different vessel from traditional mechanical tugs, and owners and yards need confidence in these new emission-reducing technologies. By delivering a complete solution, from propellor to battery, we were able to earn Mandovi and Ripley’s trust that the final product will achieve their emission reduction goals set forth by the GTTP programme.”

Partnership with Indian Maritime Stakeholders

The Netincon Marketing and Ripley Shipping, subsidiaries of Ripley Group, are involved in the project alongside Mandovi Drydocks Goa and designer Navnautics. A spokesperson from Ripley Group said: “Together with the builder – Mandovi Drydocks Goa – and designer – Navnautics – we found Kongsberg Maritime’s offer to be the most comprehensive and well-aligned with our specifications and GTTP requirements, while also being competitive. Considering this, along with their expertise and experience in the field, we have decided to collaborate with Kongsberg Maritime on the development of the first-ever fully battery-operated tug for Indian ports.”
