  • Global ship orders in May dropped over 55% year-on-year, totaling 1.66 million CGT.
  • South Korea ranked second after China, with fewer ships but higher CGT per vessel, reflecting a focus on high-value ships.
  • The global order backlog rose slightly to 163.44 million CGT, though both Korea and China saw year-on-year declines.
  • LNG carriers, VLCCs, and large container ships remain among the most expensive newbuilds in the market.

In May, global ship orders dropped sharply, falling more than 55% compared to the same month last year. Data from Clarkson Research shows that new orders totaled 1.66 million CGT across 71 vessels. Despite the downturn, South Korea’s shipbuilding industry maintained a strong position, ranking second globally in order volume after China.

New E-Learning Course Improves Global Understanding of MARPOL Annex V

WMU President, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia Jr., encouraged maritime professionals to embrace the new MARPOL Annex V course as a way to deepen their knowledge of pollution prevention and support a more sustainable maritime industry. Aimed at a wide range of users—including government officials, maritime educators, seafarers, and port reception facility operators—the course offers a structured overview of MARPOL Annex V’s key provisions.

Participants will learn about the scope of the convention, disposal restrictions, compliance responsibilities for shipowners and crew, and the environmental impacts of marine waste. It also covers enforcement mechanisms and best practices for managing ship-generated litter.

The course was developed under the IMO Ocean Litter Programme, with WMU contributing to its structure and content. It adopts a self-paced, learner-focused format with animated modules and practical exercises designed to meet the evolving training needs of the maritime community.

By promoting awareness and improving sector-wide competence, the initiative supports global efforts to reduce marine pollution from ships and helps meet the targets of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. The course is free to access through the IMO E-learning portal and is currently offered in English, with French and Spanish versions planned.
