The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced the departure of a container carrier equipped with a homegrown autonomous navigation system from the port of Busan. The ship will undergo a year-long test to evaluate key technologies such as intelligent navigation, engine automation, and cybersecurity, according to The Korean Times.

Autonomous Navigation Development Project

The initiative is part of a larger 160.3 billion-won ($120 million) government project running from 2020 to 2025. In partnership with Pan Ocean, the project aims to create autonomous systems that enhance maritime safety and reduce carbon emissions, marking Korea’s first public-private collaboration in autopilot ship technology.

Testing for Safety and Innovation

The container ship will test the autonomous system in safe weather conditions and low-traffic routes between Korea and Southeast Asia. The project is a key step toward advancing maritime innovation, with the goal of creating safer and more environmentally friendly shipping solutions.
