The Korean Register (KR) and NAPA, a leading provider of maritime software, services, and data analysis, have successfully developed a ‘Live Interface Function’ for their respective software programmes KR SeaTrust-HullScan and NAPA Steel, allowing real-time synchronisation of a ship’s structural data from NAPA software to KR’s SeaTrust-HullScan as reported by Korean Register.

Maritime software

KR SeaTrust-HullScan is a technical software that does a structural study of oil tankers and bulk carriers, as well as container ships, LNG carriers, and FPSOs, using standard structural criteria.

It is widely utilised in the maritime industries in both the United States and abroad, particularly by shipyards and research organisations.

NAPA Steel is a 3D CAD/CAE system created by NAPA, a leader in the nautical software sector.

It’s a comprehensive tool for designing, visualising and assessing three-dimensional designs that give designers, engineers, and classification societies a single source of truth.

Most shipyards utilise NAPA Steel to design ships, then use SeaTrust-HullScan to verify that the design meets the rules of the ship classification and receive permission.

A dramatic improvement

However, with the new live interface capability, NAPA Steel’s 3D model data, which is used to check the rule scantling of a ship in real-time, can now be shared with SeaTrust-HullScan with only one click of a button, considerably decreasing the time spent on design and the risk of errors. With a simple click, this live interface capability created in collaboration with NAPA may convey precise information from NAPA Steel in seconds.

This is a significant improvement over the prior setup, which required many hours of data entry into SeaTrust-HullScan.

“We expect that this substantial advancement will increase the popularity of SeaTrust-HullScan among users while also contributing to shipping design productivity and quality,” stated Daeheon KIM, Executive Vice President of KR’s R&D division.

“This co-development was implemented to realise the technical improvements required to give KR and NAPA software users genuine benefits in assessing the scantling of a structure using 3D models – finally making 3D MBA a reality.”
