In a move toward “smart ships,” the Korean Register (KR) has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to HD Hyundai Mipo and HD Hyundai Samho for their new Internet of Things (IoT)-based Smart Accommodation System. The approval was announced on September 9 at the Gastech exhibition in Milan.

The Smart Accommodation System

The system uses IoT sensors to create a more comfortable and energy-efficient living environment for a ship’s crew. It automatically controls the indoor environment, including heating, ventilation, and lighting, while also monitoring and optimizing energy consumption in real time. A key feature of the system is its verified cyber resilience, which ensures it can maintain and restore essential functions even in the event of an external cyberattack.

Industry Impact

According to executives from both companies, this AIP is a significant first step toward developing next-generation smart ships. The system’s ability to simultaneously improve crew comfort and energy efficiency is seen as an innovative foundation for the future of shipbuilding. Furthermore, KR’s verification of the system’s cyber resilience demonstrates a commitment to advancing safety standards for digital technology in the maritime industry, with the potential to set a new global standard.
