The Korean Register (KR) has unveiled two innovative digital platforms PILOT (Platform for Insightful LOw-emission Transitions) and POWER (Performance evaluation for Operational characteristics, Weather & aging Effect and fuel consumption Review) aimed at helping shipping companies navigate the complexities of carbon reduction and regulatory compliance.
Supporting Data-Driven Decarbonization Strategies
As global and regional greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations tighten, the shipping industry faces increasing uncertainty. While the EU’s ETS and FuelEU Maritime regulations are already in force, delays in the IMO’s Net-Zero Framework have left many companies seeking clarity.
KR’s PILOT platform provides an integrated solution for developing customized decarbonization plans. Using vessel-specific data, it calculates emissions, evaluates compliance costs, and compares the efficiency of various emission-reduction options, such as adopting alternative fuels or installing energy-saving devices (ESDs). The platform also enables long-term scenario modeling to prepare for future regulatory changes.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency Through Smart Analysis
The POWER platform focuses on improving vessel performance and fuel efficiency. By analyzing Automatic Identification System (AIS) data alongside weather and ocean conditions, it gives operators a clear view of how ships are performing in real time. This insight helps identify operational inefficiencies, optimize voyage planning, and reduce fuel consumption all key factors in sustainable fleet management.
Commenting on the launch, KR Chairman and CEO LEE Hyungchul emphasized that the maritime sector must balance emission-reduction goals with operational performance amid evolving regulations. Through PILOT and POWER, KR is equipping shipowners with data-driven tools to make informed, cost-effective decisions that support both environmental and economic sustainability in global shipping.
