“Kota Ebony” Joins PIL’s Growing Fleet Of LNG Dual-Fuel Container Vessels

Pacific International Lines (PIL) has expanded its fleet with the addition of a third 14,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel. The new ship, named “Kota Ebony,” was christened at a ceremony in Shanghai by Mrs. Giselle Kastrup, wife of PIL’s CEO, Mr. Lars Kastrup, reports Pacific International Lines.

Modern and Robust

The vessel “Kota Ebony” symbolizes strength and elegance, reflecting its robust capabilities and modern, optimized hull design.

It’s the third of four 14,000 TEU vessels built by Jiangnan Shipyard for PIL, and the largest in PIL’s fleet. These vessels are also notable for being the first in PIL’s fleet to run on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Lars Kastrup commented on the arrival of “Kota Ebony,” stating that they are excited to welcome their third 14K vessel. He noted that these efficient dual-fuel vessels will enhance their services and support growing trade between China and Latin America. He also mentioned that the first two sister ships, “Kota Eagle” and “Kota Emerald,” are already successfully operating on their Latin America service network, and “Kota Ebony” will further strengthen the East Coast Latin America service.

More Suited

PIL expects delivery of their fourth 14,000 TEU vessel in the coming months, followed by an additional 14 dual-fuel, biomethane-capable vessels progressively throughout 2025 and beyond. This substantial investment reflects PIL’s commitment to fleet renewal and its dedication to environmentally sustainable shipping practices, aligning with their goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The 14,000 TEU vessels are designed with an optimized hull form and high reefer capacity, making them well-suited for the Latin American trade. They also incorporate several advanced features, including high-performance anti-fouling coating for reduced fuel consumption, exhaust gas recirculation systems to minimize methane emissions from the main engine, and improved data connectivity for enhanced safety and operational efficiency.

Since 2022, PIL has ordered a total of 18 newbuild vessels. This includes the four 14,000 TEU vessels, as well as four 8,000 TEU, five 13,000 TEU, and five 9,000 TEU vessels.
