KOTUG International’s E-Pusher electric push tugs will use Shift Clean Energy’s newly-launched PwrSwäp ‘pay as you go’ battery service, says a press release published on their website.
Swappable batteries
Under an MoU just signed with Vancouver, B.C., based Swift Clean Energy, Rotterdam-headquartered towage and marine services specialist Kotug International B.V. is to offer swappable batteries as an option on its E-Pusher vessel series.
Sterling PlanB announced a rebrand to become Shift Clean Energy and also rolled out its PwrSwäp business model. Based on Shift’s energy storage systems (ESS), PwrSwäp provides customers with fully charged ePod battery cartridges and all related components which are connected through cloud-based service and management centres.
The swappable batteries are sized per trip instead of a permanent 10-year system which, Swift highlighted, ‘greatly [reduces] size and weight and cost, some of the biggest barriers to ESS use.’
Modular and scalable electric pusher tugs
KOTUG offers a range of modular and scalable electric pusher tugs, the E-Pusher series, powered by swappable energy containers. The E-Pusher design has a draft that is 30% less than conventional pusher tug designs.
Commenting on the agreement with KOTUG, Shift CEO Brent Perry said: ‘The message of COP26 is clear; we have to make changes now, with no time to waste.
‘Shipping accounts for significant GHG emissions, contributing to climate change, as well as particulates that are unhealthy for communities living near ports and inland waterways. PwrSwäp and E-Pusher bring zero emissions solutions today.’
Ard-Jan Kooren, President & CEO of KOTUG International, added: ‘Combining our services paves the way for ready to market zero emission solutions. Our modular and scalable E-Pusher design is readily available for large scale assembly.
‘We look forward to a fruitful cooperation.’
