In a strategic move to lead innovation in ethane transportation, the Korean Register (KR) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 3, 2025, during the Nor-Shipping exhibition.
This collaboration aims to jointly develop a cutting-edge Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) with enhanced cargo capacity and operational versatility. The partnership reflects a shared vision to meet evolving industry needs with environmentally sustainable and technically advanced vessel designs.
Innovation in Ethane Carrier Design
The new VLEC will be engineered to transport over 100,000 m³ of liquefied ethane at extremely low temperatures around -100°C. Ethane carriers are complex vessels requiring sophisticated technology, and this project aims to push the boundaries of conventional ship design. The vessel will not only maximize cargo space but also offer the flexibility to transport multiple gas types like LPG and propylene, enhancing its utility in dynamic market conditions.
Shared Expertise for Safety and Compliance
While HD HHI will focus on the basic and hull design of the vessel, KR will ensure that the design meets all structural and regulatory standards. KR will apply its latest structural rules for gas carriers and international maritime regulations to grant Approval in Principle (AiP). This collaborative effort underscores a mutual commitment to advancing maritime safety, efficiency, and sustainability in the gas transport sector.
