The Korean Register (KR) has unveiled its new ‘Research Report of Material Compatibility for Liquid Hydrogen Storage on Marine Application’, a comprehensive guide offering intricate technical data on materials apt for marine-based liquid hydrogen systems, reported sea news.
MEPC 80 meeting
This initiative comes in the wake of the resolutions at IMO’s MEPC 80 meeting, which set the shipping industry on a path towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions..
Among these alternatives, hydrogen emerges as a frontrunner. As a carbon-neutral option, hydrogen can also be utilised as a primary component for manufacturing other alternative fuels, including methanol. With the escalation in international hydrogen trade and transportation activities, the demand for hydrogen-fueled vessels and carriers is anticipated to surge.
To ensure the secure and efficient transport and storage of hydrogen, it’s imperative to maintain it in a liquid state, which requires cryogenic conditions.
Addressing this gap, since 2020, KR has championed the ‘Hydrogen Ship Safety Standard Development Project’, an initiative under the Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Collaborating with teams led by Dr. Kim Yongjin at the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials and Professor Kim Jeong-Hyeon at Pusan National University, KR has successfully set up a ‘Cryogenic Evaluation Infrastructure’.
Cryogenic conditions
This infrastructure, unique in Korea is tailored to evaluate materials for alternative fuels like hydrogen, which necessitates cryogenic conditions.
KR’s published report encapsulates the findings from these tests, formulating assessment techniques for materials used in hydrogen storage systems, such as tanks and pipes, and setting the standard for these materials.
KIM Daeheon, the Executive Vice President of KR’s R&D Division, commented on the significance of the report:
“The outcomes of our research will be instrumental for the maritime sector, academic community, and research bodies striving to innovate in green shipping and alternative fuels. KR is dedicated to extending its support to our clients and the broader maritime domain by pioneering novel technologies and disseminating cutting-edge technical insights to cater to environmental norms.”
