- Finnish company Langh Tech has launched an onboard carbon capture (OCC) system to reduce CO2 emissions in maritime operations.
- The system captures over 80% of CO2 from exhaust gases, with overall emissions reduction of 20-30%.
- Sodium carbonate, a byproduct of the process, can be sold for industrial applications, promoting a circular economy.
- The first commercial installations will occur in early 2025 on four bulk carriers.
- The OCC system bridges the gap to carbon-neutral fuels while supporting the green fuel transition.
According to Offshore Energy, Finnish green technology company Langh Tech has introduced an innovative onboard carbon capture (OCC) system, significantly enhancing its portfolio of exhaust gas treatment solutions. The system, aimed at cutting CO2 emissions from ships, is set to debut on four bulk carriers in 2025.
Creating Value Through Circular Economy Practices
In addition to reducing emissions, the system produces sodium carbonate as a byproduct, which can be sold and utilized in various industries. This integration of environmental and economic benefits highlights Langh Tech’s role in fostering a circular economy.
Proven Success in Pilot Testing
A pilot project conducted in 2024 onboard a Langh Ship vessel showcased the system’s ability to capture over 80% of CO2 from exhaust gases. Depending on ship specifications and space constraints, the system demonstrated the potential to reduce overall CO2 emissions by 20 to 30%.
First Commercial Installations in 2025
The OCC system’s commercial rollout will take place early in 2025, with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group managing the installation on four bulk carriers. These vessels will also be equipped with hybrid scrubbers, further advancing emissions reduction.
Collaboration Driving Green Innovations
The project is part of a collaborative initiative involving Damen Shipyards Group, Atal Solutions, and BAM Shipping. The partnership focuses on retrofitting ships with technologies to reduce CO2, SOx, and NOx emissions, with the ultimate goal of achieving up to 60% CO2 reduction.
Carbon Capture: A Transitional Solution
Langh Tech’s OCC system addresses immediate decarbonization challenges while bridging the gap to carbon-neutral fuels. Captured CO2 can also be repurposed in the production of biofuels and synthetic fuels, aligning with a broader green fuel strategy.
Revolutionizing Emissions Reduction with Advanced Technology
Using a post-combustion process, the OCC system directs exhaust gases into a capture unit where CO2 reacts with an aqueous NaOH solution. This process transforms CO2 into sodium carbonate, a stable and marketable byproduct. Langh Tech’s technology sets a benchmark for reducing emissions effectively and economically.
Paving the Way for Sustainable Shipping
By combining innovative technology with strategic collaboration, Langh Tech is advancing the decarbonization of global shipping. Its OCC system offers a practical and impactful solution, ensuring environmental and economic benefits for the maritime sector.
