- Van Wijngaarden Marine Services (VWMS) will expand its fleet in Q4 2023 when it takes delivery of a new low-emissions catamaran workboat built by Damen Shipyards.
- Waddenstroom will have dynamic positioning to DP2 class, to meet the requirements of the offshore renewables sector, and a bollard pull of 35 tonnes.
- VWMS has experience in shallow water operations, which will be enhanced through delivery of Waddenstroom in October.
This Dutch marine construction group has ordered the largest Damen Multi Cat (MuC) 3713 to support marine construction, offshore renewables, dredging support and towage in the Netherlands.
Zero-emissions damen multipurpose workboat
Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld is building this vessel, to be named Waddenstroom, and intends to deliver it in late October 2023.
The 37-m vessel will have propulsion compliant with IMO Tier III emissions standards, with a Damen selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit and urea tank installed to remove NOx from the engine exhaust.
It will also have space on deck and ready connections to install a deck-mounted containerised energy storage module to power propulsion and vessel systems with zero emissions.
Offshore renewable sector
Waddenstroom will have dynamic positioning to DP2 class, to meet the requirements of the offshore renewables sector, and a bollard pull of 35 tonnes.
This involves an innovative propulsion design featuring two 360-degrees azimuth thrusters plus one conventional propulsion arrangement aft, all combined with two compact jet bow thrusters in the bow.
Waddenstroom will have accommodation for 16 workers, with cabins for 10 people above the main deck level, which is a first for Damen’s Multi Cat series; the remaining six personnel will be in cabins below the main deck.
Distinctive features
During construction, Damen will include steelwork required to accommodate multiple A-frames to do ploughing and similar works and modify the 190 m² deck for the fixing of mission containers.
This MuC 3713 will be fitted with cranes fore and aft, with a capacity of 13.5 tonnes at 18.5 m.
Largest and most innovative model
Anchor handling, towing and tugger winches, together with bow and stern rollers and towing pins, will enable Waddenstroom to undertake a wide range of support roles both offshore and, with its minimum draught of just 2.3 m, close to shore.
This vessel will be the largest and most innovative model in Damen’s Multi Cat range.
VWMS is a long-standing client of Damen with a fleet of workboats including five Damen Shoalbusters; in 2019 it took delivery of its first Damen Multi Cat, a 30-m DP1 MuC 3013.
Sustainability with high crew welfare
“As a family-owned company, we are very pleased with the good co-operation between Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld and our team and crew regarding the ideas and philosophy that form the basis of a vessel that combines a shallow draught and sustainability with high standards of crew welfare and a future-proof propulsion system,” said VWMS managing director, Peter van Wijngaarden.
Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld commercial manager, Jeroen van Woerkum, said VWMS has experience in shallow water operations, which will be enhanced through delivery of Waddenstroom in October.
