Leveraging AI and Simulation to Create Adaptive Global Supply Chains

9

PSA BDP, a global logistics and supply chain solutions provider, and the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (A*STAR IHPC) have initiated a three-year joint research program. The objective is to leverage advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and simulation technologies to strengthen Singapore’s maritime hub position and create more adaptive and secure global supply chains.

Core Research Initiative

The joint initiative is officially titled “AI-based Event Mining and Impact Evaluation of Maritime Shipping Disruptions.” It combines PSA BDP’s global logistics expertise with A*STAR IHPC’s capabilities in AI and modelling. The primary function of the resulting AI model will be to detect disruptions, assess their downstream impact on shipping operations, and propose potential risk mitigation strategies.

Applying AI to Maritime Challenges

The project aims to provide earlier detection and a faster response capability for logistics providers, shipping lines, and port operators to help them maintain supply chain continuity amidst factors like congestion, climate events, and regulatory changes. This focus is crucial for maintaining the reliable global flow of goods, energy, and food.

Data Sources and Technology

The system will use diverse data sources to provide clear insights for risk management:

  • Structured Data Analysis
    • It will draw on data sources such as the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and other publicly available sources to forecast and manage disruption risks, particularly by providing insights into terminal capacity and utilization.
  • Unstructured Data Analysis
    • The initiative will explore the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) to analyze unstructured information, such as news articles or regulatory updates, to complement the hard maritime data.
  • Decision-Making Support
    • By integrating simulation with AI-driven insights, the model will allow stakeholders, including Beneficial Cargo Owners and PSA terminals, to make better-informed decisions when managing disruptions.
