On Monday afternoon a lifeboat was reported to have fallen off a ship and capsized when it was undergoing routine inspection.

What happened?

During a scheduled maintenance on of the lifeboat onboard the cruise ship Grandeur of the Seas fell from the ship and capsized.

Initially it was not clear how the incident had occurred.  It was said that the lifeboat had likely detached from its cables and fell into the water.

At the time of the incident, the ship’s crew may have been doing a safety drill or a routine maintenance check of the lifeboats.  Grandeur of the Seas was docked in Charleston at the time as part of a 10-day Bahamas cruise.  The Coast Guard was called to the scene and an investigation was underway.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean reported to have said that during a scheduled maintenance on one of the lifeboats fall wire, it seems the wire slipped during retrieval causing the lifeboat to fall into the water.  There were no injuries as nobody was in the lifeboat during the incident and no impact to Grandeur’s itinerary.
