Liquid Helium Leak from a Ship Contained! – MFB, Melbourne

1981

Fire rescue

Firefighters contained a liquid helium leak on-board a ship in West Melbourne overnight.  The fire fighters and associated brigadiers were called to Swanson Dock on Oliphant Street at midnight.  Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters determined the leak was coming from an 80 kilogram cylinder.  The Crew removed the container from the ship and relocated it to the spill area on the dock.  This involved removing a number of containers to allow access to the container affected.  An MFB scientific officer provided advice to the crews on scene and police assisted with securing the area.  Firefighters managed to control the leak after about 90 minutes and the scene was handed back to DP World.

Four appliances and 12 firefighters attended the incident.
