At Gastech 2024, held in Houston, USA, Lloyd’s Register and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced their joint development project (JDP) aimed at securing Approval in Principle (AiP) for a 9,300 TEU container vessel powered by ammonia. The collaboration, which was made public on September 19, represents a significant step forward in the maritime industry’s efforts to adopt sustainable fuel solutions.

Partnership Overview and Goals

Under the JDP, SHI will collaborate with Eastern Pacific Shipping to carry out design studies for the ammonia-fuelled container vessel. Lloyd’s Register, in turn, will be responsible for reviewing SHI’s deliverables and offering technical advice to advance the vessel’s design. The project reflects the urgent demand for solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector, as the industry shifts towards greener fuel options.

Previous Achievements and Broader Context

This announcement follows a recent milestone where SHI, in partnership with Amogy, was granted an AiP for an 88,000 cbm ammonia carrier. The vessel utilizes fuel cell technology powered by ammonia cracking, a process that generates hydrogen for onboard fuel cells. This development underscores the growing interest in ammonia as a viable, carbon-free alternative fuel.

Industry Impact and Future Outlook

Sung-Gu Park, President of Lloyd’s Register for North East Asia, emphasized the rising demand for container vessels that integrate advanced technologies to meet stringent environmental regulations. Park highlighted Lloyd’s Register’s leading role in supporting innovative designs for ammonia-fuelled vessels, as well as its commitment to providing clients with access to cutting-edge advancements in ship design and propulsion systems.

Hae Ki Jang, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of SHI, reiterated the importance of ammonia as a carbon-neutral fuel for a sustainable future. He emphasized that through this collaboration, SHI aims to maintain its leadership in the development of eco-friendly technologies for the maritime sector.
