  • Lloyd’s Register granted AiP to KNCC for its Elevated Pressure LCO₂ containment system.
  • The system reduces reliance on ultra-low temperatures, simplifying vessel design.
  • The design was reviewed under a joint development project between KNCC and LR.
  • The approval highlights KNCC’s leadership in advancing scalable carbon transport solutions.

Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers (KNCC) has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for its Elevated Pressure Liquefied Carbon Dioxide (LCO₂-EP) cargo containment system, marking a significant step forward in the safe and efficient transport of carbon dioxide. The recognition was formally announced at Gastech 2025 in Milan, according to Lloyd’s Register.

The new containment system enables the carriage of LCO₂ at elevated pressures, reducing reliance on ultra-low temperatures and streamlining containment requirements. This approach provides shipowners with greater flexibility in vessel design while supporting the broader development of the carbon dioxide value chain. The design underwent a detailed technical review under a joint development project between KNCC and LR, with LR contributing expertise and guidance throughout the process. Both organizations emphasized that this achievement not only validates the safety and practicality of the technology but also reinforces KNCC’s leadership in advancing scalable carbon transport solutions.
