- Lloyd’s Register (LR) introduced its virtual Cruise Ship Centre of Expertise (CCoE) at Seatrade Cruise Global 2024 to provide global, real-time support for cruise operators.
- The CCoE integrates classification, advisory, and digital services to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability, with a focus on alarm management and human capital optimisation.
- Comprising four global teams, the CCoE delivers strategic energy transition advice, technical consistency, and faster expert support through a unified, client-centric platform.
Lloyd’s Register (LR) launched its Cruise Ship Centre of Expertise (CCoE) on 9 April at the Seatrade Cruise Global event in Miami, aiming to redefine support for cruise ship operators through a unified, digital-first approach.
Operating as a globally accessible virtual platform, the CCoE brings together LR’s classification, advisory, and digital capabilities to offer cruise lines enhanced support for safety, operational performance, and sustainability efforts. The Centre is designed to deliver real-time, high-quality technical and strategic assistance from specialists across LR’s global network.
The CCoE assembles a comprehensive team of operational professionals, subject matter experts (SMEs) in both in-service and new buildings, plan approval teams, and commercial consultants. This integrated structure allows cruise operators to tackle complex challenges with dedicated support that emphasizes technical consistency, innovation, and accountability.
Among its innovations, the CCoE is conducting advanced research in alarm management and human capital optimisation, helping cruise operators manage crews more efficiently and improve onboard safety outcomes.
Beyond Classification: Strategic Digital Services for the Cruise Industry
The Centre extends its role far beyond traditional classification by providing strategic advisory for energy transition, along with comprehensive digital services including:
- Voyage optimisation tools
- Crew training and development programs
- Data analytics and decision-support platforms
By operating as a virtual network rather than a physical location, the CCoE ensures that cruise clients receive immediate access to specialised knowledge, wherever they are and whenever it’s needed—whether for ongoing operations or newbuild projects.
Leadership Perspectives: A Multi-Dimensional Approach
Joep Bollerman, Vice President of Passenger Ships and Director of the CCoE, highlighted the tangible value cruise operators can expect:
“The CCoE gives clients direct access to multi-disciplinary experts, faster technical responses, consistent application of rules across regions, and early regulatory insights—empowering them to meet challenges proactively and confidently.”
Francesco Ruisi, Vice President and Global Passenger Ship Segment Director at LR, added:
“Our CCoE model breaks the traditional silos of maritime services. By connecting clients to specialists across classification, technical operations, and digital solutions simultaneously, we help them stay ahead of industry shifts while enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and passenger experience.”
