Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co (MHI-MME) has completed retrofit work on boilers onboard 80 gas carriers as owners prepare for regulations limiting fuel sulphur content.
From 2020 a global sulphur cap, limiting sulphur in marine fuel to 0.5% or below, will be enforced by the IMO. A range of ultra-low sulphur fuel oils are being marketed by suppliers with a range of viscosities. MHI-MME noted that the wide variance in these fuels and the lack of an international standard could cause unstable combustion in boilers.
“Our technology of burner and control system developed for low-sulphur marine gas oil for main boilers allows fuel in a wide range of viscosity to be burned,” the company noted.
MHI-MME reported that it already applies the technologies to auxiliary boilers for all its newbuild vessels.
In December engineering group Harris Pye reported a contract to convert boilers for low-sulphur fuel on six vessels belonging to a Chinese LNG group, adding to boiler conversions contracted for 75 ships worldwide.
