Melbourne-headquartered resource company BHP floated a bulk carrier tender for LNG-fuelled transport for up to 27 million tonnes of its iron ore, says an article published in LNG World News.

First of its kind in World

This is the first of such tenders in the world, said the company said in its statement on Monday.

Tender open to exclusive clients

Rashpal Bhatti, vice president, maritime and supply chain excellence said that this tender will help them find potential partners who share the ambition of lowering emissions to the maritime supply chain.

The tender is open only to a limited number of companies, from ship owners, banks and LNG fuel network providers.

Objectives of the tender

The tender aims at:

  • feasible solutions to control greenhouse gas emissions and increase productivity from BHP’s freight requirements.
  • LNG-fuelled transport for up to ten percent of its iron ore.

Work for a 100% compliant solution

Bhatti added that LNG may not be the sustainable homogenous fuel of choice for a zero carbon future. Even then they are not prepared to wait for a 100% compliant solution.

He concluded that if any such solution is found, they can make significant progress with their partners.
