China is making significant strides in the LNG market, with Yantian port and other key locations ramping up operations to secure their spot as global LNG leaders. With increasing demand for LNG-powered ships, these developments position China as a strong player in the maritime energy transition, reports SP Global.
Yantian Port Leads Energy Revolution
Yantian port is located in Shenzhen. It is driving China’s LNG ambitions with a record-high bunkering volume of 300,000 cubic meters in 2024.
By 2025, it aims to achieve 450,000 cubic meters, leveraging its strategic trade routes and advanced refueling capabilities.
Yangshan Port: China’s LNG Leader
Shanghai’s Yangshan port is currently the largest LNG bunkering hub in China.
Handling 444,000 cubic meters for 76 ships in 2024, it ranks as the third-largest globally, challenging international competitors.
Emerging LNG Hubs in China
Ports like Ningbo Zhoushan and Guangzhou are also making their mark.
Ningbo Zhoushan completed over 60,000 cubic meters of LNG bunkering in 2024. Guangzhou established a super LNG hub in the Greater Bay Area.
Inland LNG Growth
CNOOC is expanding LNG bunkering infrastructure for inland vessels, developing six stations in the Greater Bay Area, and supporting LNG-powered ship transformations.
