MSC Cruises’ cruise division and Gasum, an energy company, have established a long-term agreement for the provision of LNG to MSC Euribia, the cruise line’s latest vessel. Additionally, they have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to collaborate on the supply of synthetic e-LNG produced using renewable energy sources.

Using e-LNG

Gasum and MSC Cruises have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to develop a roadmap for reducing emissions in MSC’s cruise operations using e-LNG starting in 2026. The partnership aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. MSC Cruises expressed the importance of securing a reliable supply of LNG and e-LNG for their decarbonization efforts. LNG fuel offers various environmental benefits, including reducing sulphur oxide, particle, nitrogen oxide emissions, and overall greenhouse gas emissions.

Power-to-gas process

Gasum and MSC Cruises have entered into a significant agreement regarding e-LNG, which is produced synthetically through the “power-to-gas” process. Renewable electricity is used to produce hydrogen from water, which is then converted into methane by adding captured carbon dioxide. The resulting gas can be liquefied and transported through existing infrastructure. This agreement is a milestone for the shipping industry, as it demonstrates the availability of e-LNG for the maritime transport sector in the near future. Gasum’s CEO, Mika Wiljanen, expressed enthusiasm about the long-term LNG supply agreement and anticipates lasting cooperation.
