LNG Remains Dominant as Alternative Fuel Orders Increase in July

According to the latest data from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform, orders for alternative-fuelled vessels showed a slight increase in July 2025, with a total of 28 new orders placed. This is up from 19 in June and maintains the steady pace of activity seen earlier in the year.

LNG Continues to Lead as the Preferred Alternative Fuel

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) remains the most popular choice, making up 22 of the 28 orders. The majority of these LNG vessels were container ships (19), with the remaining orders being for two tankers and a research vessel. Methanol followed with three new orders, including two bulk carriers and one offshore vessel.

First Ammonia Bunker Vessel Signals Infrastructure Development

July also marked a significant milestone with the first-ever order for an ammonia bunker vessel, alongside two ammonia-fuelled gas carriers. This development indicates that the necessary infrastructure to support long-term fuel strategies is starting to catch up with demand. Jason Stefanatos, Global Decarbonization Director at DNV Maritime, noted that this trend, combined with continued activity in LNG and methanol bunker vessels, suggests the shipping sector is proactively preparing for future fuel demands.
