Singapore-based LNG tech firm LNT Marine and China’s Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute have received approval in principle from classification society ABS for their latest LNG containment system, reads an official release.
According to a statement by ABS, the approval is for the latest variant of the LNT A-BOX LNG containment system.
A simple and robust cargo containment system
The new design is for a 175,000-cbm LNG carrier, a significant increase in capacity from the earlier 45,000-cbm design installed on the ABS-classed Saga Dawn carrier for Saga LNG Shipping, it said.
Kjetil Strand, CEO of LNT Marine, said in the statement that the cargo containment system “is simple and robust, with a self-supporting primary tank – in this case made from aluminum, and an independent full secondary barrier.”
“The tanks with internal structure offer flexible filling levels and operation. This design is efficient in terms of hydrodynamic performance and thermal efficiency offering low fuel consumption and market-leading boil-off rate (BOR),” he said.
“As this solution also enables more shipyards to build LNG carriers, we are now in a position to offer the sector more capacity, competition and flexibility in the field of LNG shipbuilding, which we believe is in the interest of the entire LNG industry,” Strand said.
LNT A-BOX
Earlier this year, LNT Marine completed the first IMO type A tank mock-up in aluminum A5083-O for the LNT A-BOX containment system at China First Heavy Industries (CFHI) in Dalian, China.
CFHI Dalian Nuclear Power and Petrochemical executed the mock-up in close cooperation with Minyu Novel Steel Structure based on SDARI’s design, according to LNT Marine.
