Lomarlabs Partners With Advanced Wing Systems to Develop Containerised Automated Wing Sails for Commercial Shipping

6

Lomarlabs announced on 9 December 2025 that it is working with Advanced Wing Systems to adapt proven wing-sail technology for merchant shipping. The collaboration aims to create a containerised and automated system designed for flexible installation across global fleets.

A Modular and Scalable System

The partnership focuses on a container-based approach to wind propulsion. The system installs during port calls, allowing deployment without dry-docking. Additionally, operators can scale the setup by adding more units, leasing them for specific charters, or returning them when no longer required.

Once deployed, the sails use artificial intelligence to adjust performance based on real-time wind conditions. They retract when not in use, ensuring they do not interfere with cargo operations.

Technology Adapted From Ocean-Proven Designs

Advanced Wing Systems has developed semi-rigid wing sails that deliver aerodynamic advantages with fewer operational limits. The technology has logged thousands of nautical miles in yachting and performance racing. With support from Lomarlabs, the company is now tailoring this experience for commercial vessels and global cargo operations.

Lower Barriers for Shipowners

The containerised design removes the need for extensive retrofits. It also allows shipowners to trial wind propulsion without long-term commitments. Leasing arrangements mirror other temporary equipment models used in ports and onboard ships.

Through the collaboration, Advanced Wing Systems gains access to Lomarlabs’ expertise in design, regulatory work and business validation. It also gains real operating environments through access to the partner’s fleet.

Statements From Project Leaders

The Co-Founder and CEO of Advanced Wing Systems noted that containerisation changes how wind systems can be adopted. He highlighted that operators can integrate the system without removing vessels from service or taking on capital risk.

The Managing Director of Lomarlabs stated that the company supports founders who turn new concepts into workable solutions. He described the technology as modular and commercially focused, noting how it fits the operational needs of shipping.

The CEO of Lomar added that the industry must balance performance, efficiency, and sustainability. He described the wing-sail system as an innovative development with potential to integrate clean-energy support into cargo operations.
