In a major step towards greener maritime operations, Dutch shipping company Longship has successfully completed the delivery of Longeden—the final vessel in a series of four ultra-low-emission general cargo ships. These vessels are part of Longship’s broader strategy to modernize its fleet with eco-friendly technologies and reduce carbon emissions. Following this milestone, the company has also placed an order for eight new PMAX ECO TRADER vessels, further underscoring its long-term commitment to sustainable shipping.
Final Vessel Delivered in Hybrid Series
Longship took delivery of Longeden, an 8,600 dwt newbuild, on July 17, completing a fleet of four ultra-low-emission vessels designed for enhanced fuel efficiency. The ships, including the first unit Longera delivered on June 25, 2024, are part of Longship’s fleet modernization strategy.
Powered by a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system, the vessels reportedly consume 45% less fuel compared to similar-sized conventional ships. Each is equipped with two azimuth thrusters featuring large-diameter, low-rpm fixed propellers and is prepared for methanol use, aligning with future alternative fuel requirements.
New Eco-Trader Fleet on the Horizon
As part of its continued green shipping goals, Longship has placed an order for eight PMAX ECO TRADER vessels, each with a 6,000 dwt capacity. These ships will be co-built by GS Projects and Ship and Steelbuilding (SaS) at a Dutch shipyard in Waterhuizen.
Deliveries will start in early 2026, and the first four vessels will be equipped with Damen Marine Components’ steering and propulsion systems, known for enhancing maneuverability and fuel optimization.
With the Longeden delivery and the PMAX ECO TRADER orders, Longship is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency. The hybrid propulsion systems and methanol-ready design reflect the company’s forward-looking approach to eco-friendly maritime operations.
