An LPG carrier reportedly caught fire while it was on its way to Russia.
What happened?
The LPG carrier named ‘Navigator Leo’ caught fire in the Gulf of Finland about 20 nautical miles south-west off Port of Kotka. The vessel under ballast was en route from Le Havre to Russian port Ust-Luga when the incident occurred.
The reason for fire:
The fire is said to have erupted at the provisions store present in the superstructure. The flames were extinguished by the crew with own means without causing sufficient damages.
The accident was reported to the local authorities and MRCC Moscow, which allowed the ship to proceed but the ship was escorted by an icebreaker and docked in Ust-Luga port.
The ship was detained for a further safety inspection and special survey.
No pollution reported:
Fortunately, during the incident, no injuries and pollution to the water were reported.
The local authorities initiated an investigation to determine the root cause of the fire. Also, the ship will be checked to determine whether sufficient procedures were taken to handle waste management. The damages will be assessed by inspectors and firefighters in the port.
