Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has issued approval in principle for a new LNG-powered dual-fuel very large crude carrier (VLCC) concept, reports Engine.

AIP for LNG powered VLCC concept

The concept has been jointly designed by French containment system specialist GTT and Finnish ship designer Deltamarin.

This innovative design fully complies with the environmental regulations set forth by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) until 2030,” GTT added.

The IMO’s indicative checkpoints call for 20-30% reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. The vessel will be equipped with a 12,500 cbm LNG storage tank. It will reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by at least 20% compared to “traditional oil-fuelled tankers”, GTT claimed.

While the use of LNG as a fuel today helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, the possibility of using cleaner alternative blends or CO2 capture technologies will enable this VLCC concept to meet future environmental standards throughout its lifecycle,” said Panos Mitrou, global gas segment director at LR.
