Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to Rondal for its Aero Wing Sail, marking a significant milestone in the development of wind-assisted propulsion systems for large yachts and multihull vessels. The AiP was granted after LR completed a concept-level evaluation under its 2025 Guidance Notes on Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems, with the announcement made during Metstrade 2025 in Amsterdam.
Aero Wing Sail: Innovative Rigid Wing-Sail Concept
Rondal’s Aero Wing Sail is designed as a rigid wing-sail that enhances wind-assisted propulsion while allowing smooth integration into modern vessel layouts.
The AiP confirms that the system has undergone assessments covering safety, structural integrity, mechanical performance, and aerodynamic behaviour.
The process included Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies, structural reviews, and mechanical system evaluations. These analyses helped identify potential operational and installation risks and provided guidance on further refinements before commercial deployment.
Industry Support and Role in Decarbonisation
Both LR and Rondal highlighted the importance of this approval in the broader push toward maritime decarbonisation.
Tom Wolodarsky of LR emphasized that wind-assisted propulsion plays a crucial role in reducing vessel emissions and improving operational efficiency, adding that the AiP reflects LR’s dedication to supporting innovative technologies.
Rondal’s Innovation Manager, Hermen de Jong, stated that the achievement demonstrates the maturity of the Aero Wing Sail concept and its readiness for use in new yacht projects.
The initiative aligns with LR’s wider efforts to support the safe, scalable adoption of wind-assisted propulsion, as explored in its Retrofit Research Programme.
The Approval in Principle for Rondal’s Aero Wing Sail marks a key step toward integrating advanced wind-assisted technologies into modern vessels. With LR’s validation and recommendations for refinement, the Aero Wing Sail is now closer to market application, supporting the shipping industry’s broader goals of sustainability and reduced carbon emissions.
