Lloyd’s Register (LR) has introduced a new Engineering Apprenticeship Programme starting in September 2025, marking a significant step in its effort to attract and nurture fresh talent for the naval sector. This first-of-its-kind apprenticeship will be conducted at LR’s Naval Centre of Expertise located in Barrow-in-Furness.
Hands-on Experience and Academic Learning
The programme spans three and a half years and blends practical training with classroom-based education at Furness College. Apprentices will be actively involved in naval surveying tasks, from construction inspections to ongoing maintenance operations. They will also contribute to preparing high-quality engineering reports, enabling clients to meet demanding technical and regulatory standards.
Core Skills and Curriculum
To prepare apprentices for a broad range of industry roles, the programme will include instruction in:
-
Computer Aided Design (CAD)
-
Root cause analysis
-
Six Sigma methodology
-
Lean manufacturing principles
This comprehensive skill set ensures participants graduate as both technically sound engineers and innovative problem-solvers, ready to respond to the maritime sector’s evolving demands.
Role of Apprentices in Naval Readiness
Apprentices will contribute directly to ensuring the operational readiness and environmental compliance of naval vessels and assets. Their responsibilities will be hands-on and aligned with LR’s commitment to technical excellence and safety standards.
Leadership Statement
Jane Green, LR’s Global Talent Acquisition and DEI Director, emphasized the strategic intent of the programme:
“Our apprenticeship scheme is more than a training programme, it’s a pipeline for future leaders in naval engineering. It is designed to provide comprehensive training in industry, allowing the successful candidate to develop practical skills and knowledge under the guidance of experienced professionals.
By investing in new talent today, we are safeguarding the technical standards and safety of tomorrow’s fleet.”
With this new initiative, Lloyd’s Register is laying the foundation for a sustainable and skilled workforce in the naval sector, ensuring that the next generation of marine engineers is equipped to tackle the challenges of modern maritime operations.
