London International Shipping Week 2023 marked its tenth year with a focus on key industry issues, such as decarbonization, innovation, seafarer safety, and diversity under the theme ‘Reframing Risk in a Complex Market’
SHE_SEES Debut exhibition
In its inaugural year, the “Rewriting Women into Maritime History” initiative, a partnership between Lloyd’s Register Foundation and Lloyd’s Register, celebrated its accomplishments.
The SHE_SEES exhibition launch event at the International Maritime Organization garnered widespread attention, with notable guests like IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim and Minister of State Nusrat Ghani.
The exhibition, now accessible online, highlights the significant contributions of over 50 professional women in various maritime roles, acknowledging their historical impact on the industry.
Global Maritime Trends
On the second day of LISW, the launch of the Global Maritime Trends 2050 research program was a highlight, delving into potential future scenarios for the maritime industry.
The program’s report suggests that a technology-driven energy transition could significantly increase female representation in the seafaring workforce by mid-century.
An all-female panel discussed these findings during the event, emphasizing the importance of preparing for industry changes.
He commented “Other industries are much better at forecasting. The financial sector, for example, has a deep understanding of potential future scenarios and how to prepare for them, but shipping lags behind. From tackling the energy transition to sourcing the next generation of seafarers, we’ve allowed uncertainty to delay action for too long. Now we’ve created a way for the industry to get a much better idea of the future. It’s time for them to get on board.”
Container Ship Forum
The third day of LISW featured LR’s Container Ship Forum and a drinks reception, uniting key industry players around the theme of ‘sustainable shipping.’
Industry experts delivered insightful sessions, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in shipping. The week offered valuable networking and collaboration opportunities, highlighting the need for transformative changes in the maritime sector.
