A.P. Moller – Maersk and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance decarbonization efforts across global supply chains and strengthen CATL’s international logistics network.

The signing ceremony, held on 9 October in Hong Kong, brought together senior executives from both companies. The agreement was formalized by Morten Bo Christiansen, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Energy Transition at Maersk, and Akin Li, Executive President of Overseas Car Business at CATL. The event was witnessed by Robert Maersk Uggla, Chairman of Maersk, and Libin Tan, Chief Customer Officer and Co-President of Sales & Marketing at CATL, along with other senior representatives.

Supporting Global Supply Chain Resilience

The new MoU builds on a five-year collaboration between the two companies covering ocean transportation, intermodal operations, and integrated logistics services. Under the agreement, Maersk will serve as CATL’s preferred global logistics partner, offering comprehensive solutions including ocean and air freight, project logistics, and warehousing.

Both organizations will also explore scalable models to maintain supply chain resilience in a dynamic global market. Tailored logistics strategies will be developed to meet the distinct needs of diverse regions, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting CATL’s expanding international footprint.

Driving Low-Carbon and Electrified Logistics

A key aspect of the partnership focuses on electrifying logistics operations through CATL’s advanced battery technologies. The collaboration will cover the electrification of container shipping, port ecosystems, inland transport, and warehousing, alongside solutions for energy management and battery recycling.

As part of the agreement, CATL will act as Maersk’s preferred battery technology partner, supporting the company’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The partnership will further promote joint development of scalable electrification solutions, advancing the global logistics industry’s transition toward lower emissions.

Shared Commitment to Net-Zero Ambitions

Maersk’s Senior Vice President, Morten Bo Christiansen, stated that the collaboration represents a significant step forward in combining battery innovation with logistics expertise, enabling both companies to contribute to a sustainable global supply chain.

CATL, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality in its core operations by 2025 and across its battery supply chain by 2035, emphasized its focus on transportation electrification, industrial decarbonization, and zero-carbon grid initiatives.

According to CATL’s Chief Customer Officer Libin Tan, the alliance will deepen cooperation in shipping, digitalization, end-to-end logistics, and new energy applications, supporting the shared goal of accelerating decarbonization in global logistics.

By leveraging Maersk’s global logistics network and CATL’s energy innovation, the two companies aim to set a new benchmark for the energy transition in maritime and logistics sectors.
