Maersk suspends fees after Hurricane Melissa

The powerful storm temporarily halted operations at the Port of Kingston, affecting vessel schedules, cargo movement, and supply chain continuity across the island. In response, Maersk has introduced several measures aimed at easing the financial and logistical burden on affected customers.

As part of the relief initiative, Maersk will suspend detention and demurrage charges for shipments handled through Kingston from October 24 to November 7, 2025. The suspension is designed to give customers time to recover from operational delays caused by port closures and infrastructure challenges. Any charges incurred before October 24 will remain applicable, but containers handled during the grace period will be exempt.

For containers discharged full and still located inside the Kingston terminal, demurrage fees will restart on November 8. Customers who manage to collect their containers before that date will benefit from the extended grace period. Likewise, containers that had already been dispatched and are awaiting return to the terminal will enjoy free time up to November 7, with normal charges resuming thereafter.

Operations at the Port of Kingston have been gradually recovering since gate movements resumed on October 30. Maersk noted that its teams are closely monitoring the evolving situation and remain committed to communicating any necessary updates as recovery efforts continue. The company reiterated its focus on helping customers manage their supply chains effectively despite the severe weather disruptions, emphasizing that customer support teams are available to provide assistance during the recovery phase.
