Maersk Expands Green Fleet with New Dual-Fuel ‘Brisbane Mærsk

According to an announcement from A.P. Møller–Maersk (Maersk), the shipping line has welcomed the vessel Brisbane Mærsk, the fourth member of its Hermes-class series, into its fleet. The naming ceremony was officiated by Mrs Eileen Hansen, spouse of Maersk’s Lead Mechanical Superintendent Gert Vittrup P.

The Brisbane Mærsk is equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of operating on both bio- and e-methanol, underscoring the company’s commitment to shipping technology advancement and its decarbonisation strategy.

Built in collaboration with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Everllence, the vessel integrates high-end design with environmental ambition.

Introducing dual-fuel capability marks a strategic milestone in Maersk’s transition toward lower-carbon operations. This move reflects the intensifying alignment of global shipping lines with cleaner fuel pathways—especially where traditional marine fuels remain dominant. The integration of bio- and e-methanol technology also signals the growing role of alternative fuel systems within large-scale container shipping.

The arrival of Brisbane Mærsk further emphasises the maritime sector’s shifting landscape where vessel procurement is increasingly driven by fuel flexibility and emissions performance, rather than capacity alone. With time-charters and fuel-contracts under pressure to deliver both cost-efficiency and environmental credentials, assets like Brisbane Mærsk are poised to become differentiators in competitive liner markets.
