147

Maersk is set to provide Chinese clients with enhanced integrated logistics solutions that promise greater efficiency, security, and environmental friendliness, aiming to support the global business expansion of Chinese companies. This announcement was made by Chen Xin, General Manager for Maersk Line Greater China’s multimodal transport products, at the recent launch ceremony of the company’s Connecting Carrier Agreement (CCA) service at Huai’an Port in Jiangsu province, China.

Introduction of CCA Service on China’s Inland Waterways

For the first time, Maersk, the world’s largest container shipping company, is offering such a service on China’s inland waterways. The new service is a result of a strategic cooperation agreement between Maersk Line, Shanghai International Port (Group) Co Ltd, and Huai’an Port, signed earlier this year.

Significance of the Launch

Chen Xin highlighted that 2024 marks a century of Maersk’s service to China’s trade. The launch of the CCA service is a pivotal move in developing river-sea intermodal transport channels within China. This initiative aligns with Maersk’s strategy to enhance the efficiency of logistics and shipping solutions for local customers.

Boost for Huai’an Port

Liu Changman, General Manager for the production business of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co Ltd, noted that this new service provides a strong foundation for Huai’an Port to expand its international shipping operations. The service allows foreign trade enterprises in and around Huai’an to use Maersk Line’s containers for customs clearance and shipment, enabling them to transport goods globally via Maersk’s extensive shipping network.

Advantages of River-Sea Intermodal Transport

The new service efficiently links inland waterway shipping with international shipping routes, reducing the time and procedures for cargo transshipments. It leverages the benefits of river-sea intermodal transport, including low energy consumption, minimal pollution, and high capacity.

Impact on Huai’an’s Development

Zhuang Dejun, General Manager of Huai’an Traffic Holding Co Ltd, emphasized the significance of the partnership between Huai’an Port and Maersk Line. This collaboration is pivotal for Huai’an’s ambition to become a national inland waterway shipping center, develop a modern water transportation system, and create a premier business environment. Over recent years, Huai’an Port has seen rapid development through its collaboration with world-renowned ports and shipping companies. The port’s container throughput reached 312,500 TEUs in the first seven months of the year, with foreign trade containers accounting for 60,800 TEUs. These figures represent increases of 10.04% and 105.06%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
