Maersk Fluid Technology has upgraded its SEA-Mate Blending-on-Board Value Calculator, a tool used to show potential savings that can be achieved by blending cylinder lubricant onboard.

The calculator highlights the value of Maersk Fluid Technology’s SEA-Mate Blending-on-Board (BOB) system, which enables the crew to blend a cylinder lubricant of optimal basicity, detergence, and neutralization from a combination of in-use system oil and high base number cylinder oil.  The result, the manufacturer claims, is both a cylinder oil optimized for the needs of the specific engine and a continuous replenishment of system oil resulting in reduced wear.

The tool generates a vessel-specific report, emailed to the operator, identifying potential savings based on engine and running conditions.  As well as highlighting cylinder oil savings, the report includes energy and consumption savings related to having a continuous refreshment of the system oil.  An estimate for expected reduction of maintenance cost – including fewer changes of cylinder piston rings and liners and reduced purifier maintenance – is also included.

Sune Lilbaek, head of sales, Maersk Fluid Technology, said: “By using the value calculator it is easy to see the potential cost savings achievable with the introduction of a BOB system. With over 200 installations to date, we have proven it is possible to achieve lubrication at, or close to, the lowest allowed consumption of lubricant as specified by the engine manufacturer.  This results in proven reductions of up to 40% in two-stroke engine cylinder oil consumption, as well as significant fuel and maintenance savings.”
