Maersk has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability journey by retrofitting the Maersk Halifax to run on dual-fuel methanol. This pioneering effort, completed in China’s Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard, marks a critical step in the industry’s transition to low-emission fuels. With increased capacity and advanced fuel systems, the vessel is now operational on the Trans-Pacific trade route.
Pioneering Methanol Retrofitting in Shipping
The Maersk Halifax retrofit represents the first successful conversion of a large container vessel to dual-fuel methanol.
The project took 88 days and was completed at the end of October 2024, setting a benchmark for future sustainability efforts in maritime shipping.
Comprehensive Engine and Fuel System Upgrades
The conversion, carried out by MAN Energy Solutions, included significant modifications. The engine was upgraded to run on methanol, and new fuel tanks, a fuel preparation room, and a supply system were installed.
The ship’s hull was lengthened by 15 meters to accommodate the changes, increasing its capacity from 15,000 TEU to 15,690 TEU.
Operational and Environmental Gains
The retrofitted Maersk Halifax has returned to service on the Trans-Pacific trade route, enhancing its operational efficiency and reducing its environmental footprint.
This advancement aligns with Maersk’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.
A Strategy Beyond New Builds
Maersk is exploring retrofitting as an alternative to new-build vessels in its transition to sustainable fuels.
Lessons learned from this project will guide future retrofits, enabling the company to maximize the lifespan of its fleet while minimizing emissions.
